Apart from their hunting skills, most hounds make excellent pets. The Akita (Japan), the Komondor (Hungary), the Portuguese water dog, the Newfoundland, the Saint Bernard (Switzerland), the Alaskan Malamute, the Bernese Mountain dog (Switzerland) and many more make this group a veritable United Nations of dogs. Due to some unscrupulous breeders and unmindful owners, a few breeds within the terrier group have developed rather notorious reputations. In more modern times, the poodle’s intelligence and trainability saw it employed in show business, commonly in circuses. Even the famous racer, the greyhound, has proved to be a well-liked family pet. Sporting dogs that are alert, active and intelligent have historically been used by hunters to locate, flush or retrieve game from land or water. Like anything else in this world, dogs come in various sizes, colours, paws, tails, fur, teeth and others. Let loose in your backyard, a terrier can build an entire golf course in a day at least, 18 holes. But despite what those who breed and sell crossbreeds might try to tell you, these are not, nor will they likely ever be, recognized as purebred dogs. Reliable, brawny and harnessing first-rate stamina, they make great companions for adults and children alike. Images of dogs closely resembling these breeds are depicted on the walls of the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs. When these dogs bite, they don’t let go. It now serves only as a loving, albeit somewhat deskbound companion. Unlike mixes, crossbreeds have clear roots – often evident by looking back just one generation. My two Akbash Shepherd Dogs, Oberon and Osa, have a very special relationship with their comrade, McDuff the standard donkey. Seeing the way these three best friends beat on each other I almost feel bad for the coyotes! (to the sensitive viewer, rest assured that these animals do not hurt each other, follow each other around peacefully most of the day, eat and drink alongside each other, and are in no danger from each other)

Q&A: Akita inu Obedience training?

My akita inu is 3 days old and she’s pretty good and calmed little pup. She’s 9 weeks and 5 days old. I’m hoping she’ll learn to be obedient soon, least to know when to come to me and stay etc.

I’m wondering if anyone can give me advice on how to train her , etc. Would be great because my mother is a little worried she’ll grow up and misbehave. Also, most importantly is how to make sure she knows when she done bad. Telling her No and bad girl firmly isn’t too convincing for her, and I wouldn’t want harsh treatment to make her lose respect for me. Some sites say scruffle her back neck but I ain’t too sure.

I know I may sound a bit new to the breed , but I’m willing to work hard for my lovely puppy Keida

Answer by DaBasset – just go to the vet!
Since you are new at this, I highly recommed finding some good obedience classes and they will teach you how to train your dog.

Instead of punishing her for “being bad” (i.e. doing things which are natural for a puppy but undesireable in a home), you need to show her what she SHOULD be doing instead.
