MAKE THE PUPS KNOW WHO’S IN CHARGEHowever, they can be your worst enemy sometimes.
HUNTING THE RIGHT HOUNDSome of the oldest breeds of domestic dogs are the speedy sight hounds. Images of dogs closely resembling these breeds are depicted on the walls of the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs. Golden Retrievers are among the most popular breeds in America. This group houses the sheepdogs and cattle dogs, including the amiable collie breeds and those regal kinds, the corgis. That’s part of the fun. Be especially careful in finding a reputable breeder of these dogs. When these dogs bite, they don’t let go. But without the right training and socialization, and in irresponsible hands, these can be dangerous dogs. The dachshund, a hound in origin, might seem to be out of place in this group, as its background as a digger accustomed to chasing foxes and badgers underground would more logically make it a terrier. Smaller dogs may be hurt by unintentionally rough children, especially those under the age of 3, but a well-trained smaller dog can be a great companion for gentler kids. Before getting to any of these things, let’s start form the most basic first:finding the right dog suitable for you. Hound dog breeds. The Akita (Japan), the Komondor (Hungary), the Portuguese water dog, the Newfoundland, the Saint Bernard (Switzerland), the Alaskan Malamute, the Bernese Mountain dog (Switzerland) and many more make this group a veritable United Nations of dogs. Too large to go to ground, the popular Airedale terrier puts its strength and stubborn streak to use as a surprisingly ferocious watchdog. Belonging to this group are some of the intelligent dog breeds which includes the admired German shepherd dog, most famous for its police work and the Border collies, the most intelligent of all breeds.
THE ANATOMY OF A CANINEHairless. Lapping It Up Dogs use their large, spongy tongues like ladles to lap up water. How about their hearing? It is, of course, essential, especially when you’re giving your commands. Two rows of six small, curved incisors help the dog maintain a firm grip on prey, while four large, pointed canine teeth tear at it. In temperate weather, canids simply breathe in through their noses to stay cool:Nasal glands secrete fluid, and its evaporation within their nasal chambers creates a cooling effect. Staying Cool. All dog paws are the same, although there are variations in shape depending on the breed’s digital bones. Because of this heightened sense of smell, it is important to be sensitive to the types of household cleaning products used. Special taste receptors on their tongues are believed to allow canids to recognize chemical composition variancessuch as salt and impuritiesin different water sources. Most dogs are able to detect scents and tastes that are beyond human perception, but some breeds have especially acute sensory skills. Domestic dogs glean both physical and emotional details about one another through their olfactory senses.
