Finding breeders of Australian Kelpies?

Question by Lorie: Finding breeders of Australian Kelpies?
I’m interested in investing in another dog, and I’d like to purchase an Australian Kelpie, but I’m having a hard time tracking down reputable breeders.

I want a dog from proven working lines, of any age, gender, or color since they will be strictly for work and not breeding. I’d preferably like them to be located in Texas. Any help?

Meet Luna a Australian Kelpie currently available for adoption at Petango.com! 11/7/2011 4:42:09 PM

Luna is a 4 year old Australian Kelpie mix that was surrendered to us because her previous owner was moving. When she arrived she was very pregnant and was placed in one of wonderful foster homes where she had her puppies. Luna is back and now ready to find her forever home. Luna is playful and friendly. She is shy at first in new situations, but once she warms up will love you forever. Luna has been around dogs and children and does fine with both. Luna has been around cats, but needs a home with dog-confident cats. She loves to roll around on fresh dryer sheets. If Luna sounds like the dog you have been searching for, come down and meet Luna today!

How much exercise would a Kelpie x Collie or an Australian Cattle Dog Cross aged 2 years require?

Question by : How much exercise would a Kelpie x Collie or an Australian Cattle Dog Cross aged 2 years require?
There are two working dog cross dogs one a Kelpie x Collie and one an Australian Cattle Dog both of whom are adorable (I would only be able to adopt one).

I would take for at least one walk a day, more likely two. One walk would be between 30 and 90 minutes, the other would be quite short. Realistically though there will be days where I wouldn’t be able to walk at all due to commitments (this would be very rare) and some days where I could only take him for a short walk (this might be once a week max).

Throughout the week I would also take the dog to an ‘off leash’ park and let the dog run free, play with the dog etc. But this would not be daily and realistically would probably be 2 – 3 days a week max.

I would play with the dog in the backyard at home (medium sized but filled with pants, flowers etc so not a lot of running room).

I would take the dog to weekly training (basic, intermediate and agility).

Would all of this be sufficient to keep the dog happy & healthy?

I’ve always had kelpies and I love them but I have a lot less time to spend (I used to take them roller blading which proved both very tiring for them and also challenging to navigate and not trip me up which they did amazingly at) but where I am now I can’t do that (unfortunately).

Advice? And please do be blunt if you think it’s not enough please tell me and feel free to make suggestions. Thank you.

well considering that the breeds that are mixed into your dog are all very active dogs that crave physical activity. Also since he/she is still pretty young and just beginning to mature it would need quite a bit of exercise. Around 30 min or more a day would be jsut enough for your dog but it really deoends on what your dogs temperment is.

Q&A: Looking for anyone with Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Kelpie experience?

Question by Orphen: Looking for anyone with Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Kelpie experience?
Im looking to get a new dog/puppy in the near future and wanted anyones experience with these types of breeds.
I have experience with working dogs (cattle, mostly), dog training ect.
However, in a way, this will be my first dog (every other dog has been a family pet).
I have plenty of space for the breed, and hope to eventually train and possibly compete in agility or obedience
Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated!! :D
Shari_King2002- I have seen extremely well trained BC’s with their owners, and your right, they are fantastic. Its that kind of bond i would like to establish with my dog. A friend of mine has a Kelpie/Dingo cross, and while he is a fantastic dog he has issues about leaving her (to the extent that he freaks out if she goes anywhere without him)
If anyone knows of any Kelpies that are the same or different that would also be helpful!!
Sassy- Im leaning towards a BC, but im still fact finding for info on all the breeds im considering :)
PlatinumMan- Grooming isnt a problem with me :) . every second night the family dog (Westie) gets a grooming in front of the TV, before bed, i think we both find it very relaxing ^.^
Just for the record, I would always and will always buy from a reputable breeder, it sounds like you really love your dogs :) . Gender isnt really an issue for me, though it would keep the peace at home if i were to get a male lol!!
